A man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps; for there is a companionship of books as well as of men; and one should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men.

Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their forite author. They live in him together, and he in them.

A good book is often the best urn of a life enshrining the best that life could think out; for the world of a man’s life is, for the most part, but the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which, remembered and cherished, become our constant companions and comforters.

Books possess an essence of immortality. They are by far the most lasting products of human effort. Temples and statues decay, but books survive. Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author’s minds, ages ago. What was then said and thought still speaks to us as vividly as ever from the printed page. The only effect of time he been to sift out the bad products; for nothing in literature can long survive e but what is really good.

Books introduce us into the best society; they bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that he ever lived. But within all this realm of choicelessness, we do choose how we shall live: courageously or in cowardice, honorably or dishonorably, with purpose or in drift. 狮，俗称狮子，是一种生存在非洲和亚洲的大型猫科动物，其雄性的鬃毛是其特征之一。它是大型猫科动物中最成功的一种动物，过去它分布在多个洲，今天它的生存环境已经相当小了。汉语“狮子”一词音译自西域。

特征

狮是继虎后第二大的猫科动物，它还是非洲最大的猎手。雄性狮可长达1.80米，肩高约1.20米，尾长1米，平均重225千克。雌性狮的身长一般为1.60米，肩高约1米，尾长约0.85米，体重150千克。非洲南部的狮最大，亚洲的最小。

狮的毛短，呈**，雄狮还有很长的鬃毛，一般呈深棕色，但也有黑色、淡棕色或红棕色。这些鬃毛从面部一直扩展到肩部和胸部。这些鬃毛可能使雄狮在鬣狗等其它食肉目对手眼中显得更大。另一种理论是长的鬃毛对雌兽来说更有吸引力。野地观察似乎证明特别深色和长的鬃毛的确对雌兽更有吸引力。亚洲狮的鬃毛比非洲狮的短。幼兽没有鬃毛。一般幼兽需要过五年才会获得完整的鬃毛。

此外狮的尾端有一簇黑色的长毛。幼兽身上有深色的斑点，但在大多数情况下这些斑点在第一年就消失了。在极少数情况下这些斑点也可以在成年狮身上看到，但非常不清晰，往往要在很近的地方才辨认得出来。

偶尔会出现白狮。但白狮并非患白化病的动物，它们的眼睛不是红色的。白狮是一种遗传结果，由于它们比较显眼，它们一般很难幸存。至今为止虽然也有关于黑狮的报道，但没有任何证明。

生活环境

过去从欧洲南部、西亚、印度和非洲都有狮。冰川期间一个亚种还在中欧和北美洲生存过，但冰川期后它们就消失了。按当时学者的报道，到古希腊时期在巴尔干半岛还有狮生存。一般认为欧洲的狮在公元1世纪由于人类的活动灭绝。

今天绝大多数狮生活在非洲撒哈拉沙漠以南，撒哈拉沙漠以北的狮于1940年代灭绝。20世纪时在亚洲的狮几乎全部被消灭，只有在印度的一个自然公园还有少数幸存。

过去除森林外，狮在所有的生态环境中都有，今天它们的生存环境大大地缩小了。它们比较喜欢草原，也在旱林和半沙漠中出现，但不生存在沙漠和雨林中。

社会结构

与其它大型猫不同的是狮生活在群中。一个狮群主要由互相之间有亲缘关系的雌兽组成。地形和猎物的多少决定一个群的大小，一个群可以由3至30只狮组成。雄兽在一个群内只待一段时间，此后它往往去找另一个群。虽然如此在一个狮群中雄狮的地位比雌狮的高。一般在一个狮群中只有一只成年的雄狮，幼狮在狮群中一般待三年，此后雄性的青年被驱逐出群，而雌兽则留在群内。

年轻的雄狮组成不稳定的小群过着游荡的生活，直到它们自己成为一个狮群的首领。一般它们要到六岁或更老才能达到这个地位。

往往一个狮群的领导地位会被另一个雄狮占据，一般当老的雄狮老了或虚弱了时，就会有年轻的雄狮向它挑战，战败的雄狮不是死亡就是逃亡。如新来的雄狮战胜，它一般将它前任的幼兽杀死，这样雌兽就比较容易和它交配了。

一个狮群的领地面积从20到400平方千米不同。一个领地的大小与狮群的大小和领地内猎物的多少有关。狮群一般用粪便、尿和从远方就听得见的呼叫声来标志它们的领地。

也有的狮群没有领地而过着游荡的生活。

繁殖

虽然雄狮在一个狮群中占最高的地位，但只有在一只雌兽同意的情况下它才能与它交配。如雌兽愿意，它就趴到地上，让雄兽跨上。从雌兽对雄兽的态度上一般可以看得出雄兽在群中的地位有多高，以及它是否在下一次角斗中会被驱逐。
